TRADITIONAL WEAVER OF BOKANI GARMENT (NATIONAL AWARD WINNER)

Profile of Artist:

Vijaykumar Amarji was born in Banaskantha Tharad in state of Gujarat. Environment of looms in his family created an interest towards looms when he was a young boy. Vijay Kumar’s grandfather was a weaver in Pakistan in Tharpakar area.

He started playing on the looms and soon started weaving on his own when he was hardly 15 years old.

Vijay Bhai makes the Bokani whose fabric is dyed by using 8 natural colours blue from indigo, brown from kattha, light brown from babool tree, green from onion skin, yellow from palash flowers and so on. To achieve the perfect colour is a lengthy process.

Over more than 15 years of time span Vijay Bhai has developed the skill and mastery over this craft. The design developed on the BOKANI is directly transferred from weavers mind and no design paper is used.

Bokani made by Vijaykumar is made of very fine organic cotton and silk. The Term BOKANI means – Bo is Two and Kan is Ears. It is a traditional wrap worn by young groom to protect his tender face and valuable earring from dessert winds.
